Before the Program Begins

As our ITT students commit to in-person classes at Queen’s, they also commit to moving to Kingston, Ontario and beginning a new chapter of their lives and careers here. Parul, Hyerim, and Prabhdeep all thought carefully about their decision to pursue their education with us and detail the different factors that impacted their decisions.

What was your overall experience moving to Canada?

Parul: Moving to Canada was an exciting yet challenging experience. The scenic beauty of Kingston, Ontario, especially the waterfront, was a major draw. The friendly supporting community here has made the transition much smoother.

Hyerim: After the pandemic ended, I wanted to introduce my two young children to the world. I was very interested in being an international schoolteacher, especially in North America.

Prabhdeep: Moving to Canada was an amazing experience for myself, however it was not always easy. This decision has transformed my life by making me come out of my comfort zone. I really liked how welcoming the instructors and support staff were here at Queen’s University. Sometimes there were some challenges such as weather and loneliness, but with the resources and support from the university, it was much easier.

What drew you to Queen’s University’s Internationally Trained Teachers Program compared to other similar programs?

Parul: I chose Queen’s University’s ITT Program because of its strong reputation, comprehensive curriculum, and the supportive environment it offers to international teachers. The focus on preparing educators for the Ontario context was particularly appealing.

Hyerim: I have known about this program since 2019. In Korea, there were workshops that introduced me to the idea of becoming a Canadian teacher. One individual from a Canadian-Korean education organization had introduced me to the ITT program at Queen’s University. Since then, I have always considered this program and waited for the right time to apply. For me, the ITT program was the perfect fit for those who already had previous teaching experience in another country or had finished their education in teaching internationally. Compared to other similar programs, this program has a unique audience and an intensive curriculum to delve into the Canadian education system using practical ways and theories.

Prabhdeep: Before joining this program, I had done a lot of my own research. With my teaching background, I wanted to pick a program that would help me enhance the skills I had. I looked at various institutes and program options in Canada. Ultimately, I decided on the ITT program at Queen’s University as it consisted of all the features I was looking for in my learning experience.

Reflecting on their Time in the Program & Going Forward

Parul, Hyerim, and Prabhdeep are all approaching the end of their time in the ITT Program. As the end of their courses comes near and they consider what life after graduation holds, they reflect on what they’ve gained throughout the program and what the future can hold for themselves and potential ITT students.

What are some skills you’ve been able to improve on or gained throughout the program?

Parul: Throughout the program, I significantly improved my understanding of the Ontario education system, lesson planning, and strategies for inclusive education. My communication and classroom management skills have also been enhanced.

Hyerim: I have learned so many new things in this program, including the Ontario education system and strategies for teaching those with learning disabilities. The Canadian and Korean education systems are quite different. If I had not had the chance to learn about the Canadian education system, I might not have been brave enough to even think of the possibility of becoming a teacher in Canada. I am also very grateful for all the professional instructors I have met and being able to learn from them through their unique experiences as educators.

Prabhdeep: I have gained great experiences throughout this program. I have been able to work on and improve my language skills, classroom management skills, presentation skills, and skill to teach in the Ontario curriculum. I have also gained experience in lesson planning, including unit plans along with strategies to accommodate students with learning accommodations. This program has ultimately helped me with my professional growth and development.

What has been a special/memorable moment for you from the program so far?

Parul: A special moment in the program was my first classroom observation. Seeing the theories and strategies discussed in class being implemented in a real classroom setting was incredible enhancing and inspiring.

Hyerim: There are so many special moments that have impacted my journey in this program, specifically my placement. My placement was in a 4th/5th grade class for five weeks at Storrington Public School. Throughout this placement, I was able to learn many practical skills to teach and accommodate students with design learning needs. I still remember how special the last day of the practicum was for me. The students had made me cards, letters, and pictures to thank me. It was my most cherished moment during the program.

Prabhdeep: I have come across various memorable experiences during the program, including graduated from the first portion of the program with Queen’s School of English. We have had special events organized for us including potlucks, maple madness trips, and workshops. All of these activities have provided me with memories that I will appreciate for a lifetime.

What would you like to do career-wise after graduating from the program?

Parul: Career-wise, I am hoping to secure a teaching position in Ontario, ideally at St. Lawrence College, and eventually become an instructor. I am also open to exploring other teaching opportunities that align with my qualifications and aspirations.

Hyerim: After graduation, I’d like to obtain my OCT (Ontario College of Teachers certification) as soon as possible. After that, I will try to get a chance to be a math teacher in a secondary school. I also have thought about enrolling in some AQ (Additional Qualification) courses as well. Additionally, I have also considered obtaining my second master’s or a PhD at Queen’s University.

Prabhdeep: After graduating from the ITT program, my goal is to find a suitable teaching job and implement all the strategies that I have learnt. I would love to gain experience in Ontario classrooms. I plan on fostering my career by creating a safe and inclusive classroom for my future students.

What advice would you give to those considering joining this program?

Parul: For those considering joining the ITT program, I would advise being open to learning and embracing new educational systems. My key tips would be to actively participate in all aspects of the program, build connections with peers and instructors, and take advantage of the resources and support available at Queen’s University.

Hyerim: Before I joined the program, my educational thinking methods were very outdated. This program has changed my thoughts and perspectives on being an educator. Now, I understand how crucial mindset is in a secondary math class, how to accommodate individual with different learning needs, and why creating a classroom for universal learning is essential. Joining this program offers an opportunity for international teachers looking to enhance their skills and knowledge.

Prabhdeep: The advice I would give to those considering this program is to approach the opportunity with a growth mindset to learn. This program will develop your current knowledge of the education system and will help students better accept challenges.
